Mouse Guard is inspired by David Petersen’s picture book of the same name, set in a world with sentient mice living in a medieval fantasy.
Our project is an action-style video game set in a fantasy underworld. The students were inspired by picture books but also by a trailer released for what was supposed to be a movie, later cancelled.
THE CHARACTERS
Character Creation and Design.
For the characters, we made the mice bipedal, trying to make them as less human as possible and adding a few ellements from the illustrations, such as very large ears and completely black eyes.
For the tortoise on the other hand, we referred to those seen in the demo trailer, they are used as a means of transporting resources, but also as a dwelling!
Environmet
An undergrowth rich with life.
The environment was the most complex element. It had to come across as alive, rich, and full of elemnts that would help us tell some of the story behind Mouse Guard. That’s why we created the bio-luminescent mushroom biome, with the sorceress’ house, to make it clear right away that this is a magical world.
Next we visit a small village where we can see how the architecture is part of the forest itself.
UNREAL ENGINE.
This project was developed using Unreal Engine.
Unreal is a rendering engine used to create triple-A video games, and with students we tried to simulate what it is like to produce a video game from scratch.
