Spider-Man: A New Universe
Spider-Man: A New Universe. This is the title of the Spider-Man animaizone film dedicated to Miles Morales.
In the original version, Shameik Moore lends the voice to the young Climber, born in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics as Peter Parker’s heir.
The style of the film has been described as “unique” because of its combination of classic illustrations and CGI: in the action sequences, in fact, the frames will abruptly switch from CGI to textures taken from the pages of the comics.
Created in 2011 by Brian Michael Bendis (story) and Sara Pichelli (drawings), Miles Morales is the grandson of Prowler, who took a formula derived from Peter’s blood from Oscorp. The experiment-aimed at replicating Spidey’s powers-also included genetically modified spiders, one of which bit Miles when he went to visit his uncle: the genesis is thus quite similar to the original, but this Climber also possesses two additional superpowers, namely the “venomous discharge” (a kind of paralyzing touch) and the ability to blend into the environment, becoming almost invisible. Now, Miles Morales is part of the same comic book universe as Peter Parker, as Marvel’s various alternate worlds merged after the Secret Wars mega-crossover.
The idea of making him the protagonist of the animated film is excellent, as it allows for the introduction of a fundamental variation from the live-action Spidey, clearly differentiating the two projects.
The script was written by Phil Lord, also an executive producer with his partner Chris Miller (Raining Octopuses, 21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie). The film is being directed by Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince) and Peter Ramsey (The Kingdom of Ga’Hoole-The Legend of the Guardians). The film is scheduled for release at Christmas 2018.
